ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

SECTION 1    GENERAL STATEMENT


Gables UK Limited is totally committed to environmental good practice and is aware that the management of environmental issues is a business function and must therefore continually progress and change.  

The Company will provide the necessary leadership and resources required to ensure that the impact of the Company’s undertakings upon the environment is minimised, and will continually monitor and audit the Company work tasks and processes to maintain the effectiveness of control measures and procedures.

The Company believes in constantly improving environmental standards and performance.  To this end it will endeavour to comply with all Acts of Parliament, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Directives.  The minimum environmental standards that will be adopted are those that are required by law, although the Company will constantly strive to exceed those standards wherever possible.

The Company recognises that the effective management of environmental issues is the responsibility of everyone and not just a function of management.  The Managing Director and all employees have specific legal and moral duties with regard to environmental management issues, energy conservation, material recycling and waste and pollution control.  

The Company actively promotes the involvement of all employees in environmental awareness and the management of the Company policies and procedures.

To ensure that this policy is effective the Company will review it annually, or sooner if there are significant changes in the business, and will make such changes known to everyone concerned by direct communication with individuals or by written notices.

SECTION  2    ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Andy Snook        Managing Director

Will assume overall responsibility for the successful implementation of the environmental policy.

Gail Snook         Company Secretary

Will assist the Managing Director with the implementation of the environmental policy.  

Lee Dodd         Operations Manager

Will assist the Managing Director and Company Secretary with the implementation of the environmental policy by assuming the necessary day to day duties with regard to site work.

Will ensure the Managing Director and other duty holders are kept informed of environmental issues, incidents or accidents which may arise during the course of a project.   

The Company will:

Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements arising from Acts of Parliament, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Directives relevant to protection of the environment.

Provide leadership in developing a positive culture towards the awareness of environmental issues and the protection of the environment.

Initiate programmes of environmentally responsible waste disposal, systems to minimise energy usage and procedures to recycle materials wherever possible.   

Ensure that equipment and any energy-reliant system is efficiently maintained and operated to minimise energy usage.

Encourage employees, where applicable to report fuel, substance, compressed air or other leaks, faulty equipment or any act or system they considered as being energy inefficient.  

Appoint competent persons to assist the Company in fulfilling its legal and moral obligations towards the protection of the environment.

Conduct investigations into all environmental accidents, incidents and near misses within a working site, and report them to the relevant authorities when required to do so by legislation.

Ensure the environmental policy extends to all the Company’s undertakings and that vehicles are properly serviced, operate on energy efficient fuels where possible, and do not carry large quantities of potential pollutants without the necessary procedures to deal with an emergency.  

Purchase or hire equipment which does not emit excessive noise levels.

Encourage office based staff to switch off lights, radiators, equipment or computers wherever possible and not to obstruct lights and radiators.   

Comply with the requirements of the Construction, Design and Management Regulations by providing to a Client, suitable information regarding the type of products used during a project and any possible future impact upon the environment.     

SECTION  3    EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES

All employees have a duty to:

Comply with the environment policy.

Make themselves aware of, and abide by any site specific or a Client’s rules regarding environmental management and any emergency procedures that may exist.  

Adhere to Company COSHH assessments of products or substances designed to effectively control waste or pollution.

Adhere to Company systems of work that are designed to effectively control waste or pollution.

Assist with housekeeping and to dispose of roofing materials, product containers or waste safely in a responsible manner.

Ensure, as far as practicable, that dust arising from the use of waste chutes or skips is minimised by the use of suitable sheeting or by water damping as necessary.   

Ensure, as far as practicable, that liquid contaminants are prevented from entering a watercourse.

Report to any duty-holder above any equipment or activity or any accidents, incidents or near misses that may have an adverse effect on the environment.
SECTION  4    POLLUTION AND WASTE CONTROL SYSTEMS

In accordance with the requirements of the:

Noise at Work Regulations 2005

Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989

Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999

Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations 1999

Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994

The Company will:

Ensure that, as far as is possible, water courses and groundwater systems are not subject to deliberate or accidental pollution, and that hazardous waste products do not enter surface water drains, including land drains or road drains.   

Maintain a secure site and working area so that, as far as reasonably practicable, trespassers have no access to potential pollutants.  All reasonable efforts will be made to ensure all potential pollutants are made secure at the end of a working shift.

When using specialist products, conduct air sampling tests where appropriate, to ascertain the level of any air-borne contaminants in order that adequate control measures may be introduced.

When using specialist equipment, carry out suitable and sufficient noise assessments to ensure that noise levels fall within permitted action levels.

Employ good working practices to ensure that dust, emissions and odours are kept to a minimum.

Ensure that all hazardous or classified waste materials are removed from site by licensed contractors and taken to a site that is licensed to accept such contaminated material.

Pay particular attention to the substance toxicity and its effects on non-target species such as birds, bees, fish and wildlife or where there is a risk of potential uncontrolled effect upon local flora and fauna.  

Ensure that all sites are left in a condition that will not be detrimental to the environment and that any Client Safety Files contain information regarding any potentially hazardous materials used during the project.

In accordance with EPA 1990, Gables UK Limited will implement suitable systems comprising Integrated Pollution Control (IPC), and as required by PPCA & PPCR 1999, suitable systems comprising Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC).
SECTION  5    ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Gables UK Limited will, in order to comply with the Government National Waste Strategy, set up and maintain an environmental management system.

Within the environmental management system the Company will:

Devise an Emergency Action Procedure to deal with any major chemical release or spillage.

Initiate and manage environmental registers and objectives.  The registers will include:

Details of the environmental effects of the organisation
The environmental legislation that affects the Company
The steps the Company are taking to improve its environmental performance  
An inventory of all chemical substances used or stored on site

Provide suitable and sufficient environmental awareness training for employees.

Conduct regular environmental audits to ascertain areas of concern or potential pollution incidents so that suitable control measures may be introduced.

EMERGENCY ACTION PROCEDURE


Wherever practicable, the Company will minimise the use of Toxic substances, and wherever possible will not use Very Toxic substances.  

The use of such substances, to include substances harmful to the environment, by Gables UK Limited is not anticipated.  However, where the use is unavoidable or is stipulated by a Client, they will be subject to a site specific risk assessment.  

In cases where the use of Toxic or Very Toxic substances is unavoidable, the stored amount on site will be kept to an absolute minimum.  All substances will be subject to an initial assessment to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2005 (as amended).  

At such times regard will be paid, within a separate staff document, to the following procedure for dealing with an uncontrolled release or spillage of a hazardous substance.  

Immediate attention will be paid to the Company COSHH assessment and substance material safety data sheet to ascertain the potential harm of the substance.

Appropriate equipment will be made available to deal with spillage or leaks and will include:

Proprietary absorbents such as sand, loose powder or granules to soak up     hydrocarbon spills with specialist absorbents to be available when appropriate
Brushes, shovels, suitable containers or polythene bags with which to gather and     collect any contaminated material  

All waste will be securely bagged, labelled and stored in a designated area pending collection by a contractor that is licensed to collect such waste.

Chemicals will not be hosed into drains or any other water course.  Where there is a risk that ground or surface water has been or might become contaminated, the following appointed person(s) will contact the Environment Agency immediately on the Incident Hotline number:
